First Reflection

The first summary we ever did was about desert police patrols; basically it talked about how desert horsemen work to keep a safe environment. Mr. Hedley was kind enough to guide us and give us tips on how to summarize each paragraph. The most important thing was to try to get the main ideas and omit the names and the quotations and to look at the openings and closings of the paragraphs.

The second summary was about road crashes, it talked mainly about children's safety and how parents play a big role when it comes to their children's safety. Mr. Hedley here showed us how to use different words and statistics in the sentences and how to again focus on the main ideas; some mistakes were corrected by Mr. Hedley and were sent back to us for review and correction; this summary was graded 10 percent from our overall grade.

coming on to our third summary which was about pearl diving; in this summary it talked about how pearl diving in the U.A.E may be gone but certainly wouldn't be forgotten and the different attempts to recreate the authentic diving experiences. In this summary Mr. Hedley explained how we should be focusing on names and dates which was pretty much straightforward.

Tour provides insight into pearl diving.

The Arabian Gulf was one of the largest natural diving economies in the world; early last century there were more than 1000 pearling boats along the trucial coast. Pearl diving was still in play in the U.A.E until the 1950s but faded away as less expensive pearls became commonplace. However in the past centuries old emirates hunt for the black pearl has not disappeared completely. EMEG (Emirates Marine Environment Group) has jointly formed a new pearl diving eco tour in the waters off Palm Jebel Ali.  The proud tradition of pearl diving in the U.A.E may be gone but is certainly not forgotten. The new daily pearl diving tour will attempt to recreate the authentic diving experience through the offering of traditional diving clothes; fish and rice dishes will be cooked aboard for lunch and pearl stories from yesteryear can be enjoyed. guests would have the pleasure of keeping as souvenirs any pearls they find.

Traffic accidents.

Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among infants and are responsible for 63 percent of deaths among children aged 14 and younger in the uae.  Although this is a major issue, the law here only says children ten years and older who are sitting in the passenger seat must wear there seat belts. But the ministry of interior prohibits children younger than ten years from sitting in the front seat. The child safety-car seat campaign is held annually to raise awareness of the importance of child car seats.   Officials believe this has a very large impact on the traffic injury and death rate in Dubai. However, child car seats restraints can reduce risks by 50-75 percent; all children should sit in the back of the car in an age-appropriate seat. Child safety seats aren't only designed for infants and toddlers booster seats are available for children over the age of four. Today there are car seats made to accommodate children through out their various stages of growth. Both weight and age are factors to consider when choosing the appropriate child-car seat. Simple unawareness is the reason parents don't have their children in car seats.
